There are
natural alternatives
to the flu shot available.
Americans are bombarded by
large quantities of fear-based propaganda regarding the flu
vaccine. The question of “should I or shouldn’t I get the
flu vaccine” is at the forefront of everyone’s thoughts. Of
course this is a personal and individual decision, but no
decision should be made without understanding all the facts.
I encourage you to do your research on this topic but will
also share my thoughts with you as well.
As a Naturopathic Doctor, I
believe that the simple act of strengthening the immune
system will prevent ~99% of the general population from
getting the flu. There are exceptions to this of course but
the majority of us do not need a vaccination.
Positive Changes to Bolster
the Immune System
1.
Diet - The first thing I instruct all my patients to
do is change their diets. Sugar, alcohol, refined
carbohydrates, inappropriate fats, etc. will all weaken the
immune system. Focus on a diet of lean meats, plenty of
veggies, complex carbohydrates and plenty of water.
Changing your diet is the single most economical and
effective thing you can do to support the immune system.
When we are eating properly all of our organ systems work
more efficiently, the quality of our sleep is improved and
we have greater energy overall.
2.
Reduce Stress - This is easier said than done and
does require a committed effort. The bottom line is
long-term stress has devastating consequences, leading to
hormonal imbalances, immune dysfunction and even death in
severe circumstances. Examples of stress relieving
techniques include deep breathing, meditation, yoga, tai-chi
and exercise. Reducing stress will definitely make you feel
better and add years to your life.
3.
Herbal Remedies - Many herbal products currently on
the market are designed to support immune function and fight
infections. When choosing an herb it is important to either
consult with a qualified practitioner and/or purchase from a
reputable company. All herbal products are not created
equal and the potency of the herbs can vary quite a bit
among manufacturers.
Some of my favorite herbs for
the winter season include echinacea, astragalus, Oregon
grape root, maitake mushroom, and elderberry to name a few.
There are so many to choose from so it is important to know
your herbs and to find the ones that best match your needs.
At the very least, a safe herb that most people are familiar
with and can easily obtain is echinacea. Just remember to
cycle on 7-10 days and off 10-14 days when using this herb
since long-term use at high doses can actually weaken the
immune system.
4.
Homeopathy - The correct homeopathic remedy can often
avert and/or significantly lessen the symptoms of the flu.
The problem lies in choosing the correct remedy. For those
who are not homeopaths, a remedy by the name of
Oscillococcinum™ (o-sill-o-cox-see-num) can be purchased in
the store. This remedy must be taken at the first sign of
the flu to work best. In my practice I also use a special
combination homeopathic remedy at the beginning and
throughout the flu season to prevent my patients from
getting the flu. This remedy is unfortunately only
available to licensed doctors and cannot be purchased in
health stores. Please contact my office directly if you are
interested in learning more.
5. Supplements -
The supplement industry is enormous and knowing what
supplements to take safely is best left to the expertise of
a Naturopathic Doctor. However there are a few tips I share
with all my patients that are safe and fairy effective for
supporting the immune system.
-
Vitamin
C/Bioflavonoid Complex: Take at least 2-3 grams per day
in divided doses
-
Zinc
Lozenges: Take 2-3 lozenges per day I divided doses and
preferably after meals
-
Garlic
Capsules: Take 3-6 caps per day depending on the potency
of the product
-
B-Complex: Take 1-2 caps per day in divided doses to
support the nervous system
-
Vitamin
A: At least 10,000 IU’s per day except in those with
severe liver disease
Conclusion
It is important for everyone to remember that there is not
one “magic bullet” that you can take or do that will prevent
you from getting the flu. It is a combination or
proper diet, exercise, rest and immune support that will
keep you healthy and happy this winter season. Please
do take some time to research the flu and other vaccinations
before you decide to get one. Do not let the media
scare you into believing that the flu vaccine is your only
option.
